Initially, The Monkees was formed as part of a situation comedy series that aired from 1966-68. The members included Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, and Peter Tork. After gaining quite the popularity, this four-member actor/singer band started touring and producing music. They were active for a period of five years- 1966-71. Even after that, they would get together and embark on reunion tours while creating music. In fact, The Monkees were often compared with the Rolling Stones and the Beatles during the peak of their career!

Although the band didn’t last long officially, it had already garnered a massive fan following. In fact, it went on to top the charts of Billboard 200 with four consecutive albums. The band’s first single, Last Train to Clarksville, was released in 1966, weeks before the series made its first debut broadcast. Its self-titled debut album, which was released the same year in October, stayed for as long as 78 weeks on the Billboard charts! It also spent 13 weeks in the number one spot on the charts. After a period of 20 years, the album went on to spend 24 weeks on the charts during their reunion!

With The Monkees series being a massive hit, there was mounting pressure to send the band to play live concerts. Defying all odds, they went on to make their debut performance in Hawaii in December 1966. As busy as their schedule was, the band hardly got any time for rehearsing live performances. In fact, some of their episodes included the live versions of their concerts.

In January 1967, the band had its first recording session as a fully functioning band. They started recording early versions of songs like She’s So Far Out, She’s In, All of Your Toys, and The Girl I Knew Somewhere. In November 1967, the band released Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd., its fourth album. Undoubtedly, it was the band’s consecutive fourth number one album. It stayed in the top position for a period of five weeks. This album featured hit songs like Words and Pleasant Valley Sunday. One of the songs in the album, What Am I Doing Hangin’ Around?, was a notable landmark in the fusion of rock and country music.

Daydream Believer, the band’s next single, rose to the number one spot in the charts yet again. This allowed the band to hold the top position in the albums chart and singles chart simultaneously. Having such a dynamic impact in the music world with their hit songs and albums, you can only imagine the peak of their career that they highly enjoyed during this time! Later, during their reunion in 1986, the band’s third album, Headquarters, and its fourth album came back to the charts and stayed for 17 weeks!

In April 1968, the band released The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees, their fifth album. Shortly after its release, it was placed at the number three position of the Billboard charts. Again, during the 1986 reunion, the album was back on the charts for around 11 weeks.

During the ‘90s, The Monkees came together to record new materials while also reissuing the entire LPs on CD. In 1996, the band released Justus, which was their 11th album. The same year, Jones, Dolenz, and Tork reunited for a 30th-anniversary tour, which was a massive success. Later on, Nesmith joined the trio in Los Angeles to promote new songs for the album. In 1997, the band performed two sold-out shows in London at Wembley Arena. Shortly after, Nesmith departed from the band and declined to tour with them. According to Jones, Nesmith was always an aloof person and was part of a jigsaw puzzle that never fit.

In 2011, the three members got together for the band’s 45th-anniversary tour called An Evening with The Monkees: The 45th Anniversary Tour. Commencing in London, England, the band moved to North America for a total of 43 performances. The tour went on to gross about $4 million. On August 8, The Monkees had to cancel ten shows around speculations that there were internal conflicts among them. Later on, Tork confirmed that there were some business affairs that needed to be taken care of while also hitting a glitch.
