With a range of at least 500 miles, even when at maximum weight and doing 60mph, the launch of the Tesla Semi has been long awaited by environmentalists. However, with problems meeting demand for the production of the Tesla Model 3, as well as the side project of getting humans to Mars, progress on the Tesla Semi has been limited. This completely electric and ultra-safe truck could be Elon Musk’s greatest contribution to the American working class and the environment. Fortunately, he’s back with a brand new prototype and it looks promising.

Tesla Semi Prototype

Safety first

This completely electric and ultra-safe truck could be Elon Musk’s greatest contribution to the American working class and the environment.

Becoming a truck driver is America’s most deadly career choice, with around 850 deaths a year. The truck industry employs 3.5 million of our working class and, as with other groups such as miners and oil rig workers, their safety has been neglected. Tesla is making great progress though, by limiting the total cost of a truck and directing this money towards safety improvements.

The Tesla Semi offers $200,000 in fuel savings, which is more than the overall cost of the vehicle. Funds have been spent developing enhanced autopilot, which prevents collisions, while a central driving position lowers the center of gravity and improves driver visibility. This new prototype seems to be exceeding all expectations, giving working-class truckers a new ultra-safe means of transport.

Environmental potential

Safety is one thing, but the environment is also of vital importance. Freight movement accounts for 16% of all corporate greenhouse emissions. With 70% of goods shipped by truck, this kind of vehicle is one of the main offenders and, of course, it largely comes down to the fuel required. With a 0-60mph time of around 20 seconds, the Tesla Semi offers a truck that can rival the speed of the most modern diesel cargo vehicles.

Environmental pollution is something which affects the poorest in society more than anyone else. Their homes lack the ventilation to clean out the air and they often don’t have the medical insurance to deal with the health consequences. By filling the road with trucks like the Tesla Semi, we have the opportunity to help improve the health and life chances of America’s lowest earners.

This is only a prototype, but it is a sign of things to come. The role of the truck driver could become a lot safer, improving the lives of millions within our working class. With a 500 mile range, this is a convenient alternative to gasoline and could help to cut CO2 emissions enormously, helping to improve the environment and the lives of ordinary Americans.
