Being a mom is a tough job – or so we are led to believe. But there are always moms ready to remove such notions from our minds. One of them is Ami Rawal Desai, a first-generation Indian-American born in Houston, Texas, to an Indian immigrant couple from Gujarat, India. Desai is the mother of two beautiful children (and expecting a third) and is making quite the name for herself as a beauty expert and lifestyle blogger and an Instagram influencer.
"I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it was with Entertainment News or real-life stories about relatable people," says Desai. In the course of her career and life, Desai had been mistaken for a Latina numerous times, something she still finds hard to believe. There weren't many people in the industry like Desai when she started out, and she felt that there was no one to look up to. Fortunately, times have changed since then, and there is a lot more diversity in the media now. Desai wanted to break the stereotype that was prevalent when she was growing up in America – that South Asians could only be successful in traditional vocations like medicine and engineering. In this, she has undoubtedly been successful. She is now raising two children while being a notable influencer on social media and appearing on several TV shows.
For Desai, the challenge of being a working mom has been prioritizing everything and finding a work/life balance, something many would believe was impossible. For Desai, being a mom has been a significant boost to living the life that she envisioned. Having children has encouraged her to pursue her dreams to the very limits of her abilities, and she has fared better for it.
Desai graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Mass Communication followed by post-graduation from Boston University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism.
Desai graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Mass Communication followed by post-graduation from Boston University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. She started her career with E! Entertainment, and CNN as a TV Producer. One of her biggest public successes was to become the host for a web-show on Oprah.com. During her time on the show, she was the mother of her first baby, who was a year old at the time, and was also pregnant with her second child.
Managing the children and her work got more comfortable as she started making smarter decisions, and when she realized that she would have to learn to prioritize each aspect of her life daily. Giving a 100% to one while disregarding the other wouldn't work, nor was equally prioritizing an option. The percentage could go low or high based on external factors.
Most importantly, Desai believes managing everything is easy once you can handle yourself. As a blogger and Instagram influencer, she loves to interact with as many people as possible every day. The only way she finds the will to do that and give time to her children, is by first giving at least 15 minutes of the day to herself.
