Killing the Chained CPI: Could the chained CPI be revived at some point? Of course. But, for now at least, it’s dead.
Berry Craig: We didn’t vote, give money, wear out shoe leather going door-to-door or staff phone banks for our union-endorsed candidates – most of them Democrats — so they could go to Washington and help tea party-tilting Republicans eviscerate Social Security.
Randy Shaw: The President is repeating his own failed script from 2009, once again shifting right just as the GOP is on the ropes and his own base is primed for mobilizing.
Joeseph Palermo: President Obama and the Democrats’ willingness to accept cuts to Social Security in the form of the gimmicky “chained CPI” right after an election where no candidate for federal office campaigned on it shows that the Right’s long-term project of undoing the New Deal marches on despite the electorate’s wishes.
Richard RJ Eskow: The “chained CPI” is an attempt to camouflage deep cuts to Social Security and other benefits, along with tax hikes on middle class wages (but not for high incomes), in a forest of numbers and terminology.
