*+-Ed Rampell: Spring is here and so is the annual Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival, which kicked off its 20th anniversary Emerald celebration with a champagne reception, awards ceremony and performances on March 21 at LA Gay & Lesbian Center.

The community of singers which has formed around SOS and its sister organizations needs help from another community: us listeners, whose lives have been so enriched by the wonderful singers — past and present — performing in Los Angeles and around the world.
*+-As a child in the late 1950s, my parents took me to see The Five Pennies, a depressing movie with some great jazz played by Armstrong and other greats. Benny Carter was the musical director, and Danny Kaye played Red Nichols, the band leader whose child was stricken by polio. I fell in love with Louis Armstrong before I was five years old. No turning back.
