Mary Dudziak: The more we explain away failures during Obama’s presidency as the inevitable consequence of political structures, the more we put off an urgent analysis of the failures of the president himself.
Randy Shaw: The real culprit here is the GOP political leadership, who have gotten away again with overturning majority rule.
Walter Brasch: Until the members of Congress develop that one iota of courage that President Obama asked for, the United States will continue to have the highest number of guns per population of 178 countries—and also rank among the world’s top 10 countries in the rate of deaths per population from guns.
Anthony Samad: Most Congress members are pollwatchers. When polls favored gun control, they favored gun control. Now that the polls are slipping, suddenly Congress is slipping. In fact, Congress is doing a total moonwalk… they look like they’re stepping forward on the issue but they’re actually moving backwards.
Victoria Defrancesco Soto: Whether it’s salsa or gun legislation, there are some things Americans may not embrace from the Big Apple. Michael Bloomberg’s $12 million gun violence ad campaign is a case in point.
Rick Broderick: The pro-life people are correct when they say there is a culture of death in this country; they are wrong in thinking that the locus of this culture is Planned Parenthood. It is a culture of death that prevails on Wall Street, K-Street, Hollywood, and our ever expanding Military-Industrial-Congressional Complex.
Randy Shaw: 2013 will lack the excitement of a presidential election year. But it is activism between elections that brings change.
Tina Dupuy: But this is the solution the NRA offers: Too many shootings requires more people armed and able to shoot. The problem AND the cure are basically the same: lots of guns.
Peter Dreier: It is time for the media to bury Wayne LaPierre where he belongs — in the business section, not the front pages.
Rev. Irene Monroe: If the men were males of color, poor white males or Muslims these recurring mass shootings would be stereotypically explained as inherent to their make-up, affirming and fueling continued fear of them.
Sikivu Hutchinson: When you’ve been suckled on Ozzie and Harriet, its “hard” to have your whiteness referenced as a source of violence; especially by people of color.
Peter Dreier: The blood of the 26 victims of the Connecticut shooting, including 20 young children, is on LaPierre’s hands. He didn’t pull the trigger, but he’s the NRA’s hit man when it comes to intimidating elected officials to oppose any kind of gun control and the nation’s most vocal advocate of gun owner rights.
