LA Progressive Live! hosts Dick and Sharon will join Ellen Snortland, coauthor of “The Safety Godmothers Talk to Teens About Personal Safety from A-Z,” to discuss women’s issues. In particular, Ellen will talk about how parents can keep their daughters safe from violence, both physical and verbal, and how women of all ages can learn physical self-defense.
Johnny Sundstrom: Over time, we need a clear and adaptive strategy of Evolution: fundamental, incremental, and long-term change always targeting results and not bogging down in wasteful debates over process.
Sheria Reid: Evidently, the right to defend oneself only applies to Zimmerman. Trayvon was followed by an adult male whom he did not know. For all he knew Zimmerman was a pedophile or a kidnapper or both.
Anthony Samad: The week after President Obama was elected in November of 2008, the FBI reported a 49% jump in background checks for gun and assault rifle purchases. Some 374,000 people sought to buy guns between November 3rd and 9th, 2008.
Andy Love: Three weeks ago, Welch attempted to kill himself by slashing his neck. He was quickly taken to the hospital by prison guards and was closely monitored thereafter.
In her new book, Columbia professor Alondra Nelson documents the multifaceted (and under-reported) health activism of the Panthers.
Victoria Law builds upon her earlier prison abolitionist critique by discussing practical alternatives for effectively confronting gender violence without using the prison system.
Jeff Norman: Maybe the top cops and mayors of other American cities should visit Los Angeles, enjoy a few bong hits with Chief Beck and discuss how to treat peaceful demonstrators humanely.
Stephen Box: The students who witnessed the pepper spray assault began to chant “Shame on you!” while maintaining their distance.
Ezili Danto: Aristide returned to Haiti Friday. I’ve not seen such genuine happiness on the faces of Haiti’s poor in over seven years. Welcome President Jean Bertrand Aristide and family.
David A. Love: Ultimately, Israel must find security through some other means outside of militarism, say these two human rights fighters. “Israel has a right to self-defense, and therefore the first thing for defending ourselves is to stop torturing and killing Palestinians.”
Andrea Nill: A new cell phone video “raises questions” about the claims made by the border patrol agent who shot and killed a 14-year-old boy earlier this week. The border patrol agent reportedly told authorities that he was surrounded by rock-throwers, as if to imply that he had no choice but to shoot his gun in self-defense. FBI special agent Andrea Simmons told the press that the border patrol agent “gave verbal commands to the remaining subjects to stop and retreat…the subjects surrounded the agent and continued to throw rocks at him.” However, the video captured by a cell phone on the Mexican side of the border shows a different scene:
GAry Coseri: The Zionist state demands the right to exist as a Zionist state—a non-signatory of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, bristling with nuclear weapons. Did Yahweh come out of the clouds and declare that this state alone can break all the rules of international decorum with impunity, without censure?
