From gentrification, New Jim Crow, to Amazon offering $10 an hour and delights of homelessness
Crisis in leadership? Americanos falling off the wagon, man. Can anyone imagine this many trillions and trillions of greenback-backed military, a mighty scary might, country shaped by punishment, levies, fines, mortgages, interest rates, repo men/women? Video-game and Hollywood sexy killing machines and armies, and yet, oh lordy, and yet, we have people by the hundreds of thousands house-less, veterans of their illegal wars hitting the bottle/pain killers and seppuku blade; and then tens and tens of millions of children eating shit for food every night. The colonizing of education by the lowest of the low harmonizers, those people that hate teachers, teaching and questioning in lieu of compliant consumers and low wage workers.
Imagine oh imagine how strange this country's fruit is, pain, prison, penury, pollution, punishment, the new Jim Crow old as the diamond-studded cuff-links on the priests of capital . . . as old as the money changers eating the livers and backbones of the people, each shekel like a million souls about to be put into currency bondage.
The crux of it is the white elephant in the room: Now, don't get apoplectic, please, but just humor this professor's viewpoint:
If you are a white male, you don’t deserve to live. You are a cancer, you’re a disease, white males have never contributed anything positive to the world! They only murder, exploit and oppress non-whites! At least a white woman can have sex with a black man and make a brown baby but what can a white male do? He’s good for nothing. Slavery, genocides against aboriginal peoples and massive land confiscation, the inquisition, the holocaust, white males are all to blame! You maintain your white male privilege only by oppressing, discriminating against and enslaving others! -- Professor Noel Ignatiev, a tenured professor at Massachusetts College loudly proclaimed to his class last Monday (Nov. 15, 2013), his final teaching day before retirement.
Oh, most of my liberal friends and others would shudder at Ignatiev's words, call for his summary banishment from the privileged table, and you can determine the rest of his thesis around this voluntary extinction of white males, whether you can even entertain the concepts behind what he says.
Would all those big bad African despots and those big bad warring Arabs like Saudis or those nuclear-tipped Indians or Pakistanis, would they be doing all the massacring without the breeding of whites controlling their countries, nations, cultures during all those centuries of conquest and imperialism? During those decades of post-colonial terror and disequilibrium?
Again, this is a professor, working with student minds, working to get young minds to go outside their colonized brains and consider how the flip side of what the Professor is calling might sound to the rest of the world's peoples:
No one has committed violence, genocide and dispossession on the level of white males. The whole purpose of white male culture is to perpetuate their privileged status and continue their oppression of non-whites. Whites don’t have a culture like other races in which traditions and customs are preserved as an expression of a common identity. White culture is an entirely economic and social culture which is about shutting out other people deemed “non-white” as a means of preventing their social and economic advancement! In other words all of ‘white culture’ so-called, stems from hatred of the other, unlike other ethnicities which do have cultures. White people are a disease, they are parasites! They don’t deserve to live!
The simple economic skirmish against the oil extractors and the bankers behind it, the Dakota Access Pipeline, is just one of a million current examples of the emblematic relationship between the white governors, the white legislators, the white businesses, the white CEOs, the white police honchos, the white White House drivel officials, and their own supremacist empty brained illogical rhetoric. Sniveling Black President sitting on his hands. Sniffling New Gilded Age Bronze Painted President To Be saying the water protectors deserve more cannon fire.
Imagine the White Bubble Brains of Media, and the others in the white privileged classes, barely understanding the context of 450 years of treaties broken, barely understanding what mother earth is and what mother water holds.
Imagine the White Bubble Brains of Media, and the others in the white privileged classes, barely understanding the context of 450 years of treaties broken, barely understanding what mother earth is and what mother water holds.
Imagine throughout the land this same sort of racism and exaction of punishment for the people outside the melanin-deficient minority. Imagine all the red-lining, all the captured soil and minds whites have become so expert at doing; imagine all the bulldozing and brain-shaping of the white vanguard, mostly men, chopping up more and more of the lives of others outside the white dominant privileged class. Detroit or Chicago, Flint or Portland, just what does this say about the vanguard, the whites, as more and more people of color are shackled to legal financial obligations, to the terror of records and fines and all the triple disgust from county and city prosecutors across the land.
Even redlining and gentrification, a white man's plan for extermination!
Elizabeth Kirkland writes, “In urban lore, the pre-gentrified neighborhood is inhabited mostly by African Americans or other people of color when the rumblings of change begin, and the rumblers are typically white–white, upper middle-class, professional home-buyers, displacing the original residents” in her article, What’s Race Got to Do With it? Looking for the Racial Dimensions of Gentrification.
It’s a tough position to be in – working in Portland, Oregon, all-encompassing lives, mine and my clients', my friends', those of the homeless-recovery-re-entry people I work for– and hearing the incoming (new) mayor outright disregard any attempt to roll out tough, real, immediate rent control measures. We are talking about one of the highest rent increases in the country, for this tri-county area. We’re talking about one of the highest costs for old and new home sales price increases in the country.
This is the state of capitalism in the un-united states of America, where politicians get into office for, by, because of the development community, skids greased by all those Chambers of Commerce honchos who decry anything around human survival, that is, survival for the fittest, us, 80 percent of the population. Take one part Trump/one part Bezos/one part Neoliberal/one part Walton/one part Democrat/ one part Republican/one part Liberal, and then add it to the cake mix that is Capitalism, and we have one flat, oozy lopsided cake from Diabetes Hell.
Mayor-senator-president-manager-CEO-king-queen-dog catcher-alderman-supervisor-night shift boss, all part of the thing that is chaos, these people who move around chess pieces – us – as if they have some power, anything, above the masses.
Portland: a housing and homelessness crisis unfolding, racist policies around gentrification, shitty jobs, CEOs and pro-Basketball Freaks and Nike and Intel and Big Medicine calling the shots, Hail to the New Chief, as if this human has no concept why someone running in 2016 would want a desk and room occupying higher office. This cascading decay, even as those suburban and oh-so-hip inner city movers and shakers live high off the tragically hip hog, all those foodie orgasms, all the conspicuous consumption trips, sweating yoga sessions, private cello lessons, boot camp workouts, kingdoms of beer brewing fluency, we are in the tumble of their rumbling.
The calculus is about making large sums of money for a small group of people. Usury . . . you know the kind: if you or I were to loan $5K to a friend, and ask for $7 K or $10 K in return, we'd be pulled into small claims court, maybe even be prosecuted, fined and jailed for such a hefty profit. “Usury,” never a word mouthed in the corridors of banks or the rental class. We know intuitively that one of the sins of Capitalism, of mankind – is making money producing nothing. Or making off with money from those who do the work. Here, Gandhi:
Wealth Without Work: This includes playing the stock market; gambling; sweat-shop slavery; over-estimating one's worth, like some heads of corporations drawing exorbitant salaries which are not always commensurate with the work they do. Gandhi's idea originates from the ancient Indian practice of Tenant Farmers (Zamindari). The poor were made to slog on the farms while the rich raked in the profits. With capitalism and materialism spreading so rampantly around the world the gray area between an honest day's hard work and sitting back and profiting from other people's labor is growing wider. To conserve the resources of the world and share these resources equitably with all so that everyone can aspire to a good standard of living, Gandhi believed people should take only as much as they honestly need. The United States provides a typical example. The country spends an estimated $200 billion a year on manufacturing cigarettes, alcohol and allied products which harm people's health. What the country spends in terms of providing medical and research facilities to provide and find cures for health hazards caused by over-indulgence in tobacco and alcohol is mind-blowing. There is enough for everyone's need but not for everyone's greed, Gandhi said.
If we were ever living in a time to change the paradigm and redo this society so the masses, the workers, the ones that use the less, need the less, who are potentially the new creators of new ideas or ideals, can survive with dignity and a roof over their heads and calories in their bellies, then this is the time, no matter which schmucks occupy the state mansions or are whipping the horses pulling the big city mayoral dung carts. Not just here on the front-lines of capitalism, Portland, another liberal city in another conservative state, but globally with the fewer and fewer elites holding more and more of the capital, or resources, or land, or agency. Ours, of course, not theirs. . . .
This is the gambit that is all about this broken democracy, this disaster capitalism, all tied to a majority of states like Oregon that are set up without worker protections, at-will (right to sack immediately), ready to hammer whichever legions of laborers end up drafting a living. This is the state of American thinking, education, and the unholy alliance of the corporate state with the political state – now, seen in cities just like Portland, OR, where the state of labor is glorifying all the hipster workers, all the new arrivals with loads of real estate cash in hand, and those disruptive economies that put robotics, economies of scale, and off-shoring above any sense of community of place with a community of purpose. This state's state of labor is now just a ho-hum fact: More than 130 people moving into the Portland area each DAY, two freeways clogged like the brain arteries of Trump, et al, and tsunami-level gentrification like a Neiman Marcus orgy for the newcomers (many from California) who have gobs of cash to spread like pathogens around this community.
This is the story of $1,000 a month rents for mini-studio apartments. Jobs that pay what we all hate to say is the big elephant in the room – less buying power than 1970s wages. Add up all the crap we need “to live” in this orgy Consumopithicus society, and we are talking about, to make it just in the major areas around the country, think $24 an hour as the true minimum wage. Just search the billionaires of Google internet and find out what the real price of gasoline is and the real adjusted (for our out-of-universe drag shoot) cost of living in the USA is!
The result is teachers, workers, regular folk, students, youth, retired, the bottom of the economic barrel (40 or 50 percent of us) people getting more than a short shrift here. This place is expensive to live in, and that is more than just the bills, rent, electricity rates, sales prices, taxes that eat at the average Joe or Josefina. It’s the class divide that wears on us -- the huge chasm between the Mercedes SUV loving folk with beach houses, too, and us, struggling and witnessing this hyper classism spin out of control.
The precipitate for me is more and more people, 18 years old, 65, and every age in between, living (sic) on the streets, camped out, under plastic tarps, inside soggy sleeping bags and rolls, running around marked by the structural violence, double-marked by the family violence/ abandonment/drug use modeling and tagged with the intensive punishment state, from K12, school to prison pipelines, death of communities, jails and courts, employers and financial sharks.
I was at a City of Portland housing bureau meeting recently, where many of the people talking were African-Americans, looking for money – not much – for some affordable housing. Projects that are a drop in the bucket. Home ownership, maybe sixty new places, for tens of millions of dollars.
While these people in the City make up parts of the cogs in the bureaucratic system, enjoying union jobs, office jobs, those creative class sort of positions around diversity and inclusion, the elephant in the room was how racist and how KKK-embedded this state is, historically and currently.
Oregon became a state of the Union in 1859, with a clear-cut constitution that excluded the right of admittance and establishment of black Americans. This was the law for more than 60 years. In 1943, the first influx of African American families moved into cramped quarters in the Guild’s Lake district and… into the new wartime housing project at Vanport to do the heavy labor in the shipping yards. Then the flood of 1948, Vanport- which had been the second largest city in all of Oregon- was under 15 feet of water and thousands of low income dock workers, both white and black, became homeless.
Portland had restrictions on who could rent what and where. Scribed into the real estate industry’s “Code of Ethics,” essentially forcing blacks into the Albina neighborhoods. No other place in Portland could a black man, woman or family rent or buy a home. This too was built into law and ramified through by deed restrictions, bank loans, and policing. While the so-called restrictions were repealed, by 1960, with 10,000 African Americans living in the city, three-quarters were still in the Albina. The fact was Portland’s schools were as segregated as Alabama’s.
Yes, the elephant in the room today is this systemic racism, the disgust this state has had against the Native tribes, and now, this city and state is teetering on deeper divisions around the toilet cleaners-maids-service workers having one set of economic realities and then those in the High Tech and white collar industries having another set.
Explosion after explosion, against the family and against the worker, until many of us are in constant anxiety mode, wondering when the last paycheck will clear the bank and when that one more missed paycheck might make us homeless.
Yet, daily, people here talk about the weather, about the new beer flavor (Bacon and Maple Bar), the Portland Blazers, the Oregon Ducks, the newest food cart cuisine of the month. It’s a harsh existence because it’s easy for many to walk around the homeless guy in the doorway, or better yet, to move farther and farther from the urban core to more and more suburban and exurban locales.
The pirouettes of young and old, stepping over hovels on the ground on their way to organically grown, locally raised dim sum. The new move, jumping over the homeless, their dogs, their children, on their way to the drag queen bar!
Out of sight, out of mind, see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. In a Trump world, all of that becomes so much more easy, but make no mistake, this moment, this scary moment for so many crocodile tear bearing Hillary Ain’t Prez Crybabies, it’s been coming like a juggernaut.
Joy DeGruy, sociologist, author and activist, spoke at the event – She was there, putting everyone in the hot seat, since, in America, whispers and white privilege and the rotten play nice game of neo-liberalism and PC-ism, all of that, goes part and parcel with Americans still, still, still failing to understand the complete failings of capitalism. Fixing a murderer with weekends out or rehabilitating a child molester with trips to Toys R Us, well, easier than fixing-tweaking capitalism.
QUOTE: The violence against African Americans is neither new nor isolated. The assaults which too many of us have witnessed or experienced directly are systematic and brutal involving the Federal Government, Law Enforcement, Long standing Vigilante Terrorists and powerful Political Groups and Organizations among others!
Crimes against humanity are certain acts when committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack directed against any civilian population. The first prosecution for crimes against humanity took place at the Nuremberg Trials. Crimes against humanity have since been prosecuted by other international courts.
They are not isolated or sporadic events, but are part either of a government policy (although the perpetrators need not identify themselves with this policy) or of a wide practice of atrocities (tolerated or condoned by a government or a de facto authority.)
Murder; massacres; dehumanization; extermination; human experimentation; extrajudicial punishments; death squads; military use of children; kidnappings; unjust imprisonment; slavery; cannibalism, torture; rape; political, racial, or religious persecution; and other inhumane acts may reach the threshold of crimes against humanity if they are part of a widespread or systematic practice.
From capture, rape, beating, torture, mutilation, medical experimentation and lynching, to murder by police, mass incarceration, serial displacement, and vigilante terrorism.
There is a preponderance of evidence that there has been and continues to be widespread perpetual assault against African Americans.
Crimes which need to be tried in the ‘World Courts. ’Are you awake? END QUOTE
This is the state of assault, from Trump to Obama to Clinton. Facebook, Google, Dell, Bloomberg, Fortune 500, Bank of America, college administrations, the digital-defense industries colluding, this is the state of wonder for the liberals, all those hopeful ones who think things are just getting better, or, the state of the missed lives and futures is attributable to the power of one's own self-sabotaging, self-destruction, self-ignorance.
I am working, living like the man my ancestors expected – true to causes, true to myself, true to the internationalist spirit, true to some rebellious nature that should represent what we all see as man and woman-kind at our finest. Yet each day is a new dawn of more sliding, more people giving up, gaining the capital, gaming the system. The average conversation is embedded in nonsense, dredged in the trivia that is Hollywood-Mass Media-Billboard Philosophy. People actually think a two dollar an hour boost - $12 – is Nirvana, some great accomplishment that “they” should be grateful for. People are talking the new Netflix phenom, the next jerk with a record label, the best powder for snow shoeing versus telemarking.
It's a battle royal, and the stakes are more than just high – they are outright counter-intuitive, this society, emblematic of what one of the richest fascists in the world is looking at: The Biggest Pig in this Neck of the Woods, Jeff Bezos, has the audacity to exist in Seattle, in this state of libertarian sickness, and throw this poverty job out into the universe. This is how the billionaires roll, and this job, $10 an hour, is the best the very best can give us, the mere fledglings.

That's Seattle, Denver, Phoenix, Portland, and all the other major cities in those states listed above. Make you cry yet, that $10 an hour King's Wage from the King Himself, Jeff Bezos? It's Orwellian, a Brave New World, an Animal Farm, where we are the creature of the Jungle, chopping off our hands and noses for money hoarders.
Jeff Bezos' insults, from a Bloomberg News piece on this fellow:
- "Are you lazy or just incompetent?”
- “I’m sorry, did I take my stupid pills today?”
- “Do I need to go down and get the certificate that says I’m CEO of the company to get you to stop challenging me on this?”
- “If I hear that idea again, I’m gonna have to kill myself.”
- “Why are you wasting my life?”
- "What consumerism really is, at its worst is getting people to buy things that don't actually improve their lives."
