Fact-Checking a Selective Exercise

Larry Wines: Where were their fact-checkers when the networks took their morning leads from an H-arrow campaign press release falsely claiming Sanders supporters had "thrown tantrums" and "thrown chairs" at the Nevada Democratic Convention?

Both MSNBC — I've taken to calling it MSHRC — and CNN, aka the Clinton News Network, wasted no time leaping into energetic "fact-checking" of Donald Trump's Wednesday morning speech. Uncharacteristically coherent and focused, he offered a detailed take-down of Hillary Clinton and her record at the State Department while donations were made by foreign governments to the Clinton Foundations.

Fact-Checking a Selective Exercise—Larry Wines

That fact-checking would be well and good if it were what it should be: their Standard Operating Paradigm. But it's not.

  • √ Where was either cable news giant on Tuesday, when only RT, the Russian-based news channel, carried the story on how our tax dollars were scandalously misused by the State Department's "Voice of America" to globally vilify Bernie Sanders? In fact, to slander him past the point of being actionable, in a lengthy broadcast piece that ended with sickeningly sweet praise of their parent agency's former Cabinet-level secretary, Hillary Clinton? Not just no fact-checking by U.S. news sources, but no report whatsoever that VOA had even made such a shocking broadcast on our dime.

  • √ Where were their fact-checkers when exit polls, for the first time ever, showed huge disparities from vote counts in several states' primaries — but always only with Democratic primary votes, never with Republican votes?

  • √ Where were their fact-checkers when longtime Democratic voters in multiple states were suddenly purged from registration rolls, but only in areas that had polled heavily for Sanders?
