Nothing in the 2016 election has been more disgraceful than our news media coverage and I don’t just mean Fox News, I mean all of them, all the networks, ABC, NBC, CBS, and cable, the works. Presenting the election as an either-or choice, with a high bar for one candidate and a bar you would have to dig deep to find for the other candidate wasn’t journalism. It was entertainment and commercial bribery masquerading as news.

One thing we need to do before there are any more elections is to let the news networks know that their irresponsibility threatens the very existence of our country.

Ask them what in the hell happened and when precisely did they make the decision that people with the integrity of Edward R. Morrow and Walter Cronkite were no longer needed in journalism? When did all sincere attempts to do investigative journalism stop and the only objective is to keep the news ball in the air, no matter how trivial, or imbecilic, it happens to be or, regardless, of who put it there, or why?

One grave detail that stands in the way of ever reversing Citizens United is that for commercial television the current system is a windfall and they are going to be loath to seeing it ended.

That this is not frequently mentioned in news reports is not surprising, but this may be a bigger obstacle to reversing Citizens United than the Congress. We must be aware that media executives can influence this process without leaving fingerprints.

I’m not sure of the best way to protest, but we need to figure it out soon and act like the future depends on it. Because it does. We need a new fairness doctrine that has something to do with integrity in news media.
