Each week, the editor’s of LA Progressive pick what they regard as a particularly insightful comment from one of our readers, both to draw attention to one particular reader’s thoughts and to encourage more readers to weigh in with their opinions. This week’s pithy “Feeback Friday” response comes from Tom Hall, who commented on Bruce Lerro’s “Anti-Trump” New Left Continues Crypto-Identity Politics
The essay seems to be steeped in the “identity politics” it wants to condemn! We are presented with “lefitsts” (bad), the “New Left” (bad), “socialists” (good), “right-wing leftists” (bad) “anarchists” (good), the “New Deal” (bad), “socialism” (good), “capitalism” (bad), “a socialist program” (good).
But not a single sentence or phrase about what makes “socialism” or “a socialist program” meaningful for anyone wanting to improve society. For decades, the corporate right has used the terms “socialist” and “communism” as scare words. I expect that almost NO ONE using those terms as scare terms has any idea what either of them actually means.
Using them to identify the “good guys” rather than offering any practical thoughts on how to improve our politics or social economics is simply a new layer of identity politics, layed on top of a well funded organized history of denigrating those terms. It is playing identity politics with a losing hand.
How about ignoring the labels and trying to deal with real practical solutions?
